Purple Mattress - King - Purple 1 (Original)

My wife and I bought a new mattress earlier this year. We've had it for 11 months now, so we've had a good length of time to try it out.

First of all, let me clarify which mattress I'm talking about. Purple has several now. This is their original Purple mattress. Some people call it the Purple 1 because it has 1 inch of Gelflex Grid, while the Purple Hybrid (Purple 2) has 2 inches and Purple 3 has 3 inches and Purple 4 has...

Yes, 4 inches.

You know when you've seen a word so many times it starts to look weird...

Purple

Purple looks weird.

Ok, so this is the mattress I'm reviewing.

First, I did not pay $1699 for it. My wife saw on Facebook someone in our town who picks up the mattresses that people don't want after their 90 or 100 or 180 or 360 day trial, and then resells them. So they are lightly used and she was really good about cleaning them, etc. And we got it for half that price. So I would look on your classifieds or Facebook Marketplace and see if someone near you is doing something similar.

So we went to her house and she laid out a Purple 1, Purple 2, DreamCloud, and Nectar mattress.

We also went back later and bought a Nectar mattress for our guest room, that I'll review later.

I didn't sleep on any of those other mattresses, but I did lay on them and try them out.

My wife and I both like a firm mattress, which is part of the reason we went with the Purple 1 instead of the Purple 2.

The other part of the reason was price.

I do really like this mattress. I am mostly a side sleeper, will sometimes sleep on my stomach with no pillow or my back with no pillow. I do still get a bit of a sore back when I wake up with the Purple, but I'm not sure the mattress is to blame. That's kind of always been the case.

My wife has a very petite frame and also sleeps on her side and has been really happy with this mattress.

The grid is pretty cool, and does a good job of being supportive yet soft, firm yet flexible, like their website says.

After having purchased this mattress and the Layla in the past year, I feel about neck and neck with which I prefer. I'll say more about the Layla in my review of it, but I like that it is reversible - has a firm and soft side (although you've probably already made the bed by the time a guest arrives and don't want to ask them if they like firm or soft and then  remake the bed). The soft side is way too soft, but the firm side is really nice. The lady we bought the mattresses from - a mattress guru of sorts - said the Layla is what she has on her bed in her house. So that was interesting to me as well.

Overall, I am happy with our purchase. It isn't the perfect mattress for me, but it is a good mix of firm and soft.
