Layla Queen Mattress
The Layla
If you read my post about the Purple Mattress, I shared a story about purchasing our mattress from someone who had a contract to pick up mattresses that people decided to return during the "satisfaction guarantee" period. Well, our Layla mattress came from the same place. Very lightly used - looks and feels (and smells) brand new.
We got this mattress for our guest room and had several happy guests who said it was really comfortable, but I hadn't actually tried it until a week ago. I decided to sleep on it instead of the Purple mattress in our room for a few nights and see what the difference was.
First let me tell you a few unique things about the Layla mattress.
It has a firm side and a soft side (or, if you look at the cover, a light side and a dark side... The Dark Side?)
The cover is removable - as we got ours "used", I removed it and washed it before putting it in our guest room. It says on there that it's not really supposed to be washed, but I washed it on a very gentle cycle and air dried it and it was just fine (for one wash, anyway).
When you remove the cover, the inside looks like two big pieces of memory foam tied together with a women's nylon large enough for an elephant. That's pretty much all there is to it.
But it is comfortable.
I slept on the firm side. I am a side sleeper primarily, but also sleep on my back some. I'm somewhat slender at 6' 0" and 175 pounds. I've not slept through the night for quite a few years - in part because of our 4 small children and in part because I just tend to toss and turn. That being said, the first night I slept on the Layla I felt it was too firm - which is surprising for me because I like firm! The second night was better, but still felt a bit firm. By the third night, I was quite comfortable and slept quite well (I mean, besides a few wake-ups from toddlers needing to go to the bathroom or having scary dreams).
Back to my beginning story - the lady who sold the mattress to me (who has a 3 car garage full of mattresses and another storage unit full of more) told me that the Layla is what she sleeps on. I laid on a Purple, Purple 2, Purple 3, DreamCloud, Nectar, and I don't even remember what else, in her garage. But out of all the mattresses she has tried, the Layla has been her favorite.
Now I know mattresses are not a one-size-fits-all thing. Some like soft, some like firm. Some like memory foam, some like hybrid. Some like the Purple gel matrix, some like ... well, does anyone actually like traditional spring mattresses? Probably not.
My point is, just because I like the Layla and found it to be quite comfortable, and just because my black market mattress saleswoman prefers it, doesn't necessarily mean it's for you.
But I hope that my review will at least help you in the decision.
Please comment with any questions and I'd be happy to answer them.
Jason
